Situated in the heart of Interlaken, amidst the lush greenery and impressive mountain peaks of the Bernese Oberland, the Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa is a true grand dame of Switzerland’s hotel scene, combining old-world elegance with modern innovation, and the best of Swiss hospitality too. Here, opulence reigns supreme, with palatial interiors, a state-of-the-art holistic spa and superior fine dining options that have lured everyone from great writers to emperors and kings. With a history spanning 150 years, this address remains the epitome of Swiss luxury, offering all the modern amenities one could want — in a wonderfully traditional setting, with views to match.
Opened in 1865, Victoria-Jungfrau Grand hotel & Spa is living testimony to the golden age of tourism in Switzerland, offering all the charms of a bygone era without sacrificing modern conveniences. It was young hotel entrepreneur Eduard Ruchti, who acquired the Pension Victoria—a previous doctor’s house—in 1856, and commissioned local architects to transform it into a luxury hotel. After much success, Ruchti later acquired the neighbouring Hotel Jungfrau, and connected the two buildings together, creating the dome-topped Victoria Jungfrau as we know it. Today, the charm of the Belle-Epoque era lives on in this magnificent venue. The hotel skilfully blends the old and new, preserving its 19th-century grandeur, while inviting guests to enjoy an array of contemporary experiences.
Rich velvets, chandelier-lit salons and polished marble hallways sum up the Victoria-Jungfrau hotel, with every detail transporting guests back to the opulence of the Neo-baroque period. All public spaces have a certain regal air about them—with gilded furniture, wall tapestries and remarkable ceiling frescoes done by Otto Haberer— while the renovated rooms and suites are designed in a classical style with refined furnishings. Its hard not to revel in the old world allure of this historic venue, with centuries-old architecture and interiors so carefully preserved, that one could easily imagine eminent guests such as Mark Twain or the Emperor of Brazil visiting this dazzling place.

What can we expect from the rooms?
The hotel has done a great job of revamping its 224 guestrooms and suites, offering elegant interiors with soft tones, fine fabrics and clear lines, while retaining original features that give an authentic charm. Incorporating neutral-toned parquet flooring, floral print armchairs and large marble bathrooms, the standard rooms are both refreshing and traditional, and provide a pleasant amount of space to relax in. Upgrading to a suite gets you even more space and a unique style too — imagine the Bollywood-themed Yash Chopra Suite, with dark tones and Indian-style decor, or the 215 square-metre Tower Suite, with its own kitchen, dining room and terrace offering superb views of the Jungfrau massif.
The orangery-style La Terrasse restaurant is a sophisticated affair of palms, marble columns and candelabras — and the place where guests can indulge in fine cuisine by chef Stefan Beer. Expect creative delights made from local ingredients like the regional salmon trout tatar, with buffalo stacciatella from Schangnau, or the gently smoked agnolotti with pike from lake of Brienz, seasoned with fennel and dill. For something less formal, Ristorante Sapori—doused in opulence with its gilded stucco and murals—is a good choice for wood-fired pizza, pasta or grilled fish and meat dishes.
It’s easy to see why the Spa Nescens at Victoria-Jungfrau is widely regarded as one of the best spa destinations in Switzerland; with wellness facilities spanning 5,500 square-metres, including everything from private spa suites and relaxation areas, to exclusive treatments rooms offering better-ageing therapies and cosmetic remedies by Swiss brand, Nescens. Besides this, guests can enjoy the spectacular, neoclassical indoor swimming pool—reminiscent of a grand Roman bath— along with two jacuzzis, an outdoor whirlpool, a sauna, steam baths, and a garden terrace offering dramatic alpine views. The stylish Spa Nescens has got something for anyone looking to relax, rejuvenate and reconnect with nature in luxurious surroundings.
